Leslie J. Powell, Board Member

Leslie J. Powell was born and raised in the City of New York where he graduated from a technical and academic program at Haaren High School. He attended Howard University where he received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1962. He holds a Masters in Engineering Management from UCLA Executive Engineering Program, and completed the United Way’s Program for Board of Director Officers. In addition, he has had exposure to many managerial and technical educational opportunities in his employment situation.

In 2001, after more than thirty-eight years in the aerospace industry he retired from the Boeing Co., formally known as Rockwell International’s Shuttle/Space Systems Division, where for years he was an Engineering Project Manager.

Mr. Powell was selected to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in April of 1988. He has served on the various committees of the Zeta Rho (ZP) Chapter and in the capacity of Chaplain and Vice Basileus for three years each and Basileus for the two years. It was during his tenure as Chapter Basileus in 1998 that he was elected founding President the Zeta Rho Foundation. In 1990 and 1996 he was awarded the ZP Chapter’s Omega Man of the Year. In 1994 he was the recipient of the Chapter’s Superior Service Award and in 1997 the Founders Award.

His community activities include a Life-membership in the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers where he served on its Board of Directors for twelve years as a Member at Large, Vice President, and for three years as President of the organization.

He is a founding member of the National Council of Black Professional Engineers and has served on its Board of Directors from 1986 to 1995. During that time, he held the position of Treasurer and CFO of the National Council. He also has served on the Citizen’s Goals Committee during the formative period of the City of Carson, CA and holds a NAACP Life-Membership.

Since 1975, he has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington, CA. He currently serves as Chairman of the Church’s Board of Trustees, holds membership on the Finance Committee, and participates in the choir. He is also an active member of the United Methodist Male Chorus. Finally, he has been married to Carolyn Derr Powell for forty-six years; they are the proud parents of two adult children and four very active grandchildren.
