Mentorship, Coaching & Education Support

Mentorship plays a critical role in the success of African American youth. Through consistent guidance, trusted relationships, and access to resources, mentoring helps young people navigate challenges, build life skills, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Bridge Builders Foundation’s mentoring approach addresses opportunity gaps by connecting youth to caring adults, real-world experiences, and pathways that support college readiness, career exploration, and long-term personal growth.

Our Mentorship Approach

In a world shaped by systemic inequities, positive youth development is not optional — it is essential. BBF’s mentoring model is rooted in Positive African American Youth Development, emphasizing racial identity, civic and community engagement, leadership development, and future orientation.

Mentoring relationships are designed to be longitudinal, evolving over time from pro-social guidance to trusted mentorship built on mutual respect, shared experience, and accountability. BBF’s approach is asset-based, meeting young people where they are and helping raise life trajectories rather than reinforcing deficit narratives.

Program Structure & Engagement

BBF mentors engage students weekly during the academic year, with sessions lasting 60–90 minutes during school hours. Additional mentoring sessions are offered on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., providing extended learning and enrichment opportunities.

Weekly mentoring is complemented by:

  • Quarterly community enrichment field trips at school sites

  • Monthly field trips for Saturday program participants

These experiences are designed to expand horizons, expose youth to new environments, and spark aspiration through real-world engagement.

Programming operates from September through June, with an optional summer component, ensuring consistent support beyond the traditional school day.

Thriving Under the Influence Mentor Program

BBF’s Thriving Under the Influence Mentor Program is an intentional mentoring, coaching, and leadership initiative serving African American youth. The program is delivered by a robust network of over 100 professional African American men across diverse disciplines, providing dynamic small-group engagement and culturally relevant guidance.

Mentors are trained in Healing-Centered Engagement and integrate lived experience with real-world learning. Sessions address topics such as leadership, conflict resolution, financial literacy, mental health, civic responsibility, and navigating systems ,all through a lens that affirms identity and potential.

The program has expanded to serve hundreds of youth annually and has been recognized through regional initiatives supporting youth development and community safety

.

Beyond Academics

BBF’s mentoring extends beyond academic success. The program creates a supportive environment where youth can process real experiences, build emotional resilience, and envision futures that extend beyond present circumstances.

By centering relationship-based learning, cultural relevance, and consistency, Bridge Builders Foundation ensures young people are supported not only as students — but as emerging leaders.
