The Start to Finish Scholars Program is designed to address persistent gaps in college access, persistence, and completion for African American male students. Nationally, African American males graduate from high school and college at significantly lower rates than their peers, with the greatest challenges impacting low-income and first-generation students.
Bridge Builders Foundation created the Start to Finish Scholars Program to provide sustained academic, financial, and mentorship support that helps students not only enroll in college, but complete their degrees and transition successfully into careers or graduate study.
The Start to Finish Scholars Program supports African American male students from high school through higher education by combining financial assistance with long-term mentorship, coaching, and career guidance.
Since 1982, Bridge Builders Foundation has awarded over $1,500,000 in cash assistance, supporting several hundred African American male high school seniors as they matriculate into college. In addition to financial support, participating scholars receive:
This comprehensive approach ensures scholars are supported throughout their educational journey — not just at the point of college entry.
Students in the Start to Finish Scholars Program consistently outperform national averages in college completion.
Since 2010:
These outcomes reflect the impact of consistent support, accountability, and relationship-based mentorship over time.
Many Start to Finish Scholars continue on to graduate or professional schools or transition directly into the workforce. Through BBF’s network of corporate and individual partners, scholars often gain access to career opportunities, internships, and professional connections that support long-term success.
The program’s goal extends beyond degree completion, preparing scholars to thrive as professionals, leaders, and contributors to their communities.
